Abstract

The concept of imago Dei in Genesis 1:26–28 constitutes the theological foundation for understanding human dignity as the image and likeness of God. However, its interpretation has often been shaped by the ideology of normalcy, which associates the image of God with physical perfection, intellectual capacity, or functional ability. As a result, persons with disabilities are frequently perceived as less representative of the image of God and consequently experience marginalization within both society and the church. This study aims to reinterpret the meaning of the image and likeness of God in Genesis 1:26–28 through the perspective of Disability Hermeneutics and to examine its implications for the contemporary church. This research employs a qualitative library research method using a hermeneutical approach. The analysis focuses on the historical and theological context of Genesis 1:26–28, the meanings of the Hebrew terms tselem and demut, and their dialogue with disability theology. The findings reveal that the image and likeness of God are not determined by physical condition, intellectual ability, or functional capacity, but rather by God's gracious act of creating every human being as His representative in the world. Consequently, persons with disabilities fully bear the imago Dei. This interpretation encourages the contemporary church to move beyond the ideology of normalcy, cultivate relationships grounded in equality, and develop inclusive ministries that affirm the dignity of every human being.
